ORLANDO, FLA. — Shaniqua Hawkins’ voice trembled as she spoke publicly for the first time about the death of her son, Lamar Hawkins III.
At times, she even rocked back and forth, taking long pauses in between sentences — an attempt to fight back tears.

“The hopelessness was overwhelming,” Hawkins said about her son, whose nickname was Shaq. “Our hearts are broken, and our lives are forever changed. Shaq is gone.”
The student at Greenwood Lakes Middle School in Lake Mary, Fla., killed himself in the school’s bathroom on Wednesday.
His mother said they were aware of Lamar’s issues with bullies. But the boy, 14, never led his parents to believe he would take his own life, she said. …

«Beim Ringen kann ich die weissen Lichter oben in der Halle sehen. Ich denke an die Körper der Gegner, welchen Teil ich attackieren kann», sagt Max Lamm. Der 13-Jährige ist Ringer – und blind. «Ich höre die Gegner schnaufen und die Trainer, die ihnen Tipps geben. Ich mag es, zu gewinnen, und ich mag das Gefühl, zu dominieren.» Und das tut Max oft. The killing of an unarmed man by a Bay Area police officer last week deserves equal attention to other controversial examples of cops using deadly force, the victim’s father said Wednesday.
A police officer in Richmond, California, shot Richard “Pedie” Perez multiple times outside a liquor store on Sept. 14, but witnesses and the police department have conflicting accounts of what preceded the shooting.
Police say Officer Wallace Jensen first tried detaining the 24-year-old because he “displayed obvious signs of being very intoxicated.” Jensen said he shot Perez for trying to grab his gun. But a lawyer for Perez’s parents says witnesses have claimed Perez didn’t make threatening moves, though he resisted being…
